Lift/Transfer pump

Yahoo Message Number: 28348
With all the discussion about these pumps, has anyone actually been able to acquire the famous gasket that fails on the subject pump. I wrote to Cummins and received a one and one half page response that basically said there isn't much I can do about it. I want to rebuild my pump but local sources say no parts. I desire to carry a spare.
Reminds me of the ride height valve problem. I carry 2 spares for that problem.

James,

I just replaced the gasket on my Intrigue. There are two part numbers #4928511 and #4928512. Mine took the older style #4928511. I purchased it at Cummins - Orlando for $5. They had them in stock and said he had sold several.

It wasn't that difficult to change. However, having skinny arms will help. It's kinda tight if you don't remove any of the fuel lines. I just removed the (3) cap screws which hold the pump to the bracket.
The pump will then drop. Removed the old gasket and in with the new one.

There really didn't appear to be much difference in the old and new gasket. Same material and maybe .005 greater thickness with the new one.
Just a note, my lift pump did not leak at all. I have not been using ULSD fuel very long here in the south. West coast owners have probably been using it for a while now, so maybe they will notice leaks sooner if at all.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for reporting on the replacement, I purchased 2 from the Cummins dealer in Las Vegas - no leaks so far.

James, I purchased a replacement gasket at the local Cummins Dealer (Cummins Atlantic in Chesapeake, VA) part number 4928511, price $4.29 plus tax. Like you, I plan on carrying it just in case. I have looked under the engine and can see the pump, just above the starter motor. I have not checked to see if it's accessible through the bedroom access panel.

I received a replacement gasket, Cummins P/N 4928511 which supposedly was recently developed by Cummins for this problem. It was bought at Cummins/Southern Plains in Houston on Jan 8th. I haven't had the opportunity to have the gaskets switched out as yet. There is a parts man there, (ex-mechanic), Carl Sauer, phone (713)679-2220 who is familar with the problem. He will need your engine serial number to identify the proper gasket. My coach is a 99 Intrigue, #10787, with a 350 ISC engine.

I've been following the discussions about the lift pump gasket failures and have come to the conclusion that these are all electric motors with the pump attached to this motor with the failing gasket between. My 1995 Cummins C8.3 has a mechanical lift pump (very similar to the good old mechanical fuel pumps on a gasoline engine) and none of this seems to apply.

Am I correct? Love the mechanical Cummins!

Fred & Jim

I found an actual copy of the Cummins documents in .pdf format and put 3 different documents discussing the lift pump and gaskets in the files section.

Hi Jim (Hughes),

In the files the 6T5-18 new lift pump gasket topic.pdf is a repeat of the ISL_Lift_Pump.doc; the Cummins lift pump 3949085 is an example only and applies to one situation as you pointed out; the EO5033 is the early warning issed prior to Topic 6T5-18. It is important to point this out for clarification and that this subject has been on going with several threads to date - some folks missed the first thread.

Not trying to step on anyones toes but things sometimes get wrapped around the axle.

Where applicable - either a 4928511 or 4928512 replacement gasket is available from a Cummins dealer for about $5. Armed with your engine serial number and reading topic 6T5-18 (8 pages and must be read carefully) will identify which repacement gasket might be needed, the ..511 or ..512. After 2003/2004 time frame, no replacement is required. I have purchased 2; one coach owner recently replaced his by himself. I will only replace mine if it starts to leak. If you go to a dealer, they may recommend replacing the pump and the gasket and not just the gasket; pump cost of between $250 and $300 plus labor.
I recommend registering online with cummins quick service; it is free for one ESN(engine serial number) and gives you the base engine information as well as a complete parts list for your engine. Your ESN is found on the inside of the bathroom cabinet door.

Hey Fred,

Agreed, the 06T5-18 is a dupe. The doc file is a cut and paste of the original. Sometimes things get lost in the transition as well as wraped around the axle as you say. I like to make sure I have the actual document.

As far as the P/N 3949085 I realize the example is for a specific ESN, it is however the same assembly part number that was installed in my coach when my lift pump failed in Sep 2005. That is one of the same P/N's that is listed in E05033 dated 3 Aug 2005. When I was at Cummins South here in Jacksonville last week to get some other work done, one of the guys in their parts said that now the lift pump Cummins is issuing from their parts dept for my engine is a different P/N. He said the one I had was good for the ULSD.
I also talked to Terry in service and he indicated that they were not seeing any problems from ULSD in any of the coaches or other vehicles coming in. Of course this could be the typical loyal response.
