Tire Size

I've got a 2002 Intrigue and it's time to re-tire the coach even though we only have

29K miles on the tires. I've been very happy with the original Toyo M111Z tires size

12R22.5 but with all the flap going on about Toyo not recommending their tires for

the Country Coach has driven me to research other alternatives. The leading candidate among the consensus of comments and opinions seems to be the Goodyear G670 RV that is supposedly the "only" tire specifically manufactured for

Class A motorhomes whereas the Toyo is a truck tire that has been adapted to RV

use. If I'm incorrect on the above statement, that is not the point of this message so

I don't want to get off topic of my real question.
The closest Goodyear G670 RV tire to the original equipment Toyo M111Z seems

to be the 295/80R22.5. It's a bit smaller in diameter than the Toyo (41.2 versus

42.6) and the same overall width (11.6). Since I tend to run heavy (max GVW), I'm

looking for maximum safety margin. I just stumbled across another Goodyear G670 RV tire, the 315/80R22.5. It has an "L" load rating versus "H", is still just a tad

smaller in overall diameter (42.3 versus 42.6), but it is slightly wider (12.3 versus
11.6).

Any of you tire wizards and experts have an opinion as to whether this additional

width would be enough to compromise the dual tire spacing requirements? I like

keeping the larger diameter and would feel much better with the higher load rating.

Any thoughts?

It sounds like the tires are 0.7" wider. Is there 0.7" + minimum dual space between the duals now. That might be one way to tell.

Will the 315's fit your rims? I thought the Goodyear spec sheet had a minimum rim size of 9.00 inches. I thought all Intrigues came with
8.25 inch rims.

Hi Steve,

I have asked around and hear the same story - Toyo has the best sidewalls. The M111Z in 12R22.5 16PR is readily available, the warehouse is in Primeville, Oregon close to Bend. They turn tires 9 times a year. Les Schwab in the Sacramento, California area for example quotes $423 each ($497.14 with ST and FET). Trucks deliver on Tuesdays and Fridays and 1-3 notice is required dependent on the particular Tire Center, I talked to three.
My thoughts are stay with Toyo, I have no side wall cracks after 6 years, run at 95 psi and will stay with them awhile longer.

Steve,

Get your tire spacing requirements direct from tire maker. Same for rim requirements. There is no safer source of tire information.

Have you compared your load to rim weight rating?
None of the tire shops have been able to tell me any reason MH tires are better for MH than truck tires.

Isn't the ultra-violet protection better? At least according to Goodyear on their rv tires.

Yes, the whole point of Goodyear RV tires is that they will get more damage from UV rays than mileage. I had good luck with the Goodyear 614 tires on my fifth wheel. I'll probably go with Goodyear when I need to replace these Toyo's.

Our new Goodyear tires have a 7 year lifespan they say, with much more improved UV protection...to the point they say NOT to use any UV protector on them. We'll see...they ride nicely.
