Low oil pressure indication w/ISL 370

Yahoo Message Number: 14281
Forgot to identify my engine/coach.

I have been experiencing a low oil pressure indication at idol. The analog gage reads about 5psi at 600 RPM and about 45 psi at 1700 RPM. Called Cummins and they asked if I had a check engine light, which I don't. They said this points to an indicating problem. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if anyone else has changed the "sending" unit on the engine? Thanks

Hi Larry,

There are two oil pressure senders (sensors).
The OEM sensor (single wire) is installed by CCI and is connected to the dash gauge.

It cannot be obtained from Cummins but can be from CCI.
The other (3 wire) is installed by Cummmins and is connected to the engine ECM. It is very accurate and can be displayed with various Silverleaf and other products.

Thanks Fred! That's good information. I didn't know about the second sensor.

I am not sure if the ISL and ISC use the same senders, Cummins said they did, and my brothers ISL370 does use the same as my ISC350.

I am curious how you were able to get your Silverleaf to display the oil pressure. Mine shows a constant psi which does not vary under any conditions. When I asked Cummins they said the Silverleaf will not show the actual oil pressure.
As I recall from earlier posts on this subject, this is what all the Silverleafs show. If there has been a Silverleaf firmware/software fix I would sure like to get it.

Thanks,

Hi Jim,

Do not confuse the oil pressure sender with the oil pressure switch.
The switch is what is used to energize the tie solenoid. Look at diagram foldout S0699.

Hi Chuck,

I use the $395 box from Silverleaf which is connected to my laptop - the oil pressure readout works perfectly. What you have described was posted over two years ago as to the situation you are experiencing.
Suggest you call with Silverleaf directly.

Thanks for the information. My Silverleaf is the VMS 200, I'll check with them to see if there has been any changes to that model.

I called today regarding the Silverleaf and was told that after introducing the ISL, Cummins changed the oil pressure sending unit to a switch, allegedly there were problems with the original set up. Hence it is not possible to read the actual oil pressure on a Silverleaf. They were surprised that you could, unless your ISL is one of the pre-change engines. I'm not sure when this took place. I did not speak with Martin Perlot and this information was relayed back to me from his office.
I would be curious if anyone with an ISL the same vintage or newer than mine can read the actual oil pressure either on the VMS 200 or the VMSpc.

Thanks again,

I had the low oil pressure two times on my 99 Intrigue and learned the hard way that an after market sensor is not good. According to CC the sending unit has to be the same brand as the oil pressure gauge.

Chuck,

Me too, my Silverleaf shows 55 lbs whether at idle or against the governor. If you find an update or fix, please let me know.

Chuck,

Unless something is tricking me, I believe I'm reading the oil pressure on my VMS in my ISL 400. It changes frequently so at least it's not same number constantly.

Hi Chuck,

I have an ISC, so I get the pressure reading. I couldn't remember the ISL situation - sorry!

For the ISL, there are ways but it requires some engineering.
The OEM sensor output can be converted to digital readout.
I don't have the right catalogs at my finger tips but I would start with digitkey.
