Replacement Batteries

All this talk about batteries is making me nervous. I purchased our 98 Intrigue last fall and have verified from the previous owner that the batteries are original. Is this very unusual? If I am to replace them what type should I consider? What do the gelcell batteries cost? Are they more reliable? Are they worth it? What does the AGM initials stand for?

I am not an expert on batteries but I would think using a hydrometer and doing a load test on your batteries would help determine how much life they have.

I have a '99 Allure delivered in November of '99. I replaced the two coach batteries in '02 because they would not hold a charge. They were the wet cells. Replaced them with two Lifeline batteries and have done a super job for us. We can dry camp for a couple of days without running the generator and we would have the TV on, use the Microwave, the vacumn, hair dreyer etc. My original chassis battery is now on its final leg and I will say good bye to it in a couple of weeks (has done better than any other 8D wet cells that I have had. Usually only get about three years out of the wet cells.
If the batteries in the coach are original, I would look into replacing them rather than be on the road with them finally giving it up.

They cost three to four time the led acid golf cart batteries you can get from SAMs. They work as well and their capacity is about the same... perhaps a little more. They don't have vent caps and are less messy to keep clean. I'll let one of the more technical folks tell what AGM stands for.
My personal opinion is, if you do battery maintenance properly the incremental cost of AGM batteries are not worth it. But, that is my personal opinion. If I had the disposable income to buy them I would, simply because they are truly maintenance free.
I bought the Interstate T105s for about $63/each at Sims earlier this year.

AGM stands for Absorbed Glass Matt or AGM for short. Unlike normal batteries or flooded batteries which maintenance needs to be done periodically to top them off with fluids. AGM's are sealed and don't need maintenance except for properly charging them and temp controls like all batteries. Another advantage of AGM batteries are that they can be mounted vertically for example unlike a normal "flooded" battery.
