Replacing the Engine Muffler

Yahoo Message Number: 76417
Would like to hear from anyone who has replaced the muffler on something around 2002 Allure/Intrigue.
Our tailpipe extension "fell off" - we have obtained a new extension, but upon inspection we found that part of the outlet flange on the muffler is rusted/rotten.
Are the Country Coach engine mufflers generic (like, common to other vehicles), or were they custom made for each application?
Ours (2002 Allure, 350 Cummins, side radiator)has a 90 degree turn - the inlet and outlet are 90 degrees.

The muffler itself looks decent, but the flange is "gone".
Any help appreciated - or suggestions about a source. We do most all of our own maintenance and are really not interested in "where to have it done" - - we just need to find a source for the part.
We are in South Carolina at the moment, headed for south Florida later this week.
I repeat - we need to know if this thing is generic (common to other vehicles) or if it was custom made for CC back in 2002.

I don't know about your specific coach, but there are several alternatives. Some folks replace the muffler with a straight pipe, others with specialty mufflers. What you need to now is inlet size, outlet size and length. If you check here www.rvchassisparts.com/ it is a reasonable price source for many items.
There is also a large chrome shop in Florida on HWY 75 or 95 (can't remember which).

I replaced the muffler on our 2000 Allure when the tip came off also. I ordered a "Flowmaster" of the correct opening sizes and it had it's own short extension that sticks out the side exhaust hole perfectly. I needed an elbow which I got from Summit Racing also. The whole deal was about $200 and works perfectly..in fact, I believe the "flowmaster" design may actually give the claimed effficiency increase!

There is a chrome shop on I-75 at Wildwood, Fl... Take the Fl 44 exit and go west for a block or so... Not far off the interstate...

Just replaced ours with the Aero Turbine 5050XL. Not sure if the ISC (assume 350 is the ISC?) also has a 5" pipe? If not, then the 4040XL. Our chrome tip was in pretty good shape, and they were able to re-use that. It is a bit louder when going by bridges or side concrete walls, but I did not notice any significant change in noise from the driver seat. We have a total of 20 mils on it, after driving it home from the shop. So, no opinion on if it will allow a bit more breathing from lower back pressure. We'll see, as that is why we put it on, our OEM muffler looked good (I gave it to the shop as they had a gent that they felt they could use it for. Save him some money, as they will charge him labor only, and I like to see it being used down the road:)!

Best of luck!

Jim,

They are generic and not custom made.
When you say 90 degrees I think you are indicating side in/end out.
You should be able to get the numbers off the bottom of the muffler.

On mine and another members 2001 Intrigue it is a Nelson 86542.
Here is a link to the Nelson Muffler Products page. Open NPG005. Page 3-16 has the specs for my muffler.

I ordered mine from Ryder. Here is a link for what I ordered.

Yours could be the same but try to get the numbers off the bottom of the muffler. As some have indicated, you do not have to go back with the same muffler that you currently have but I decided to stick with the same as the original.

Hope this helps.

Most likely it is a Nelson sold by Fleetgard. At least that is what was a match on my coach. Cummins shop replaced it.

I was a Caterpillar service tech in my other life. I used a Die Grinder and removed the muffler piping on our 99 Allure in a Campground and took the Muffler to NAPA as three days later around a few hundred dollars got a exact match! If your handy do it yourself or any Cat Cummins Dealer or truck shop can do it. Keep us posted Ken 99 Allure 30356 in Yuma AZ.
