Blown airbag

Yahoo Message Number: 72954
I have been in a RV park in Colorado Springs for a month now and this afternoon, while I was watching TV, the passenger-side front airbag on my coach exploded. It exploded with such noise and concussive force that two of my neighbors' car alarms on their tow cars went off! I have contacted Kevin Waite and he is locating a replacement airbag to ship to me. I drove to the Camping World south of Colorado Springs (in my tow car) and made an appointment for August 9th (earliest possible) to have the airbag replaced. I also have a call in to a mobile technician to see if he could replace the airbag while I am parked here in the RV park. I once drove about a mile in my '99 Allure with a blown airbag and while the drive was very rough I made it back to a Cummins shop that I had just left.
It is about 10 miles to the Camping World, most of which is on I-25. Can I drive the coach to the appointment? Or, should I call Coach-Net and have it towed on the day of the appointment?

I'm also obviously open to any other suggestions anyone might have.

My coach is a year older and I do not have an answer for you but I am wondering if your air bag that blew was fully inflated to level your coach? I have ridden in a greyhound bus that blew out the rear airbags and it was an extremely hard ride. I am not sure but I think as long as you tire is not touching the top of the inside of the fender or hitting the fender when turned you would be ok to go slow. I just wonder what effect you will have on the other front air bag that might be caring alot more wieght than usual. Maybe you will be replacing two air bags sooner than later?
Not sure if you can close off that air valve on the air bag the blew or pull the fuse on the auto leveler (travel mode) once you deflate the other front bag (before you put it in drive) so that you are just riding on the bump stops to get to your destination.

Bummer.

Keep us posted on how that works out for you. I am interested in your experience and what it cost for another airbag. I might just get one as a spare. They can't be too difficult to replace, unlike a coil spring suspension, for a saturday mechanic with a 10 ton hydralic jack.

Brian, I also had a blown airbag last year and drove it 125 miles to freightliner in Colburg, Oregon with
no damage it was a rough ride but doable, just keep the speed to 45 mph and slow down for any bumps

in the road.

I sent a request for more info on the bag that is on ebay. The next step is either remove your bag and check the number on the bottom of the lower mount plate.
I also sent a email to Jim Cooley to get the number form CC. I also asked if CC has one in stock for your coach number. He should have it first thing Monday and hopefully get a responce right away. Thanks, I'll wait to hear from you. I obviously can't remove the air bag as it sits here in the park. I have the CC part number (I think) from the chassis manual. The number is #34022-8 (section 3.5 of the parts section of the chassis manual).
What's your opinion on driving it ten miles or so with the blown air bag? Thanks for your help. Brian Davis

I figured I could drive it if I have to. Just don't like the idea of driving 40-45 miles an hour on an interstate highway.

Brian, my coach 40' Intrigue with cat C-13 has a 14,000# front axle. The Firestone Part# is W01-675-7667

This bag is made by firestone but only sold to Holland Nuway. Hollands part is 90557256 and they only
sell to distributors. The part # is on the airbag, but hard to see. If you call Holland Nuway (800/876-3929)
and give them your axle assembly # they will confirm the airbag used on you coach, but won't sell you one.

It is not highly recomended to drive on a blown air bag( safety reasons)You may find that you will not even be able to build enough air to release the brake. If the tires are not rubbing the under belly of the floor you may be able to bypass the HWH by pulling the 7.5 amp fuse in the control board. But be aware that you will not have air to the rear either and this will cause an odd angle on the drive shaft u-joint. LOWEST speed possable would be recomended. A good mobile tech accustomed to doing chassis work of most any kind (say change a shock) should be able to replace the air bag by the side of the road, or in a park. Need good jack & jack stand for the one corner, and fairly common tools. Two jacks would be better but not mandatory.
Some bags but not all have a hard rubber bumper inside so the frame settles on the bumper not on steel plate. However some don't include the bumper if the design does not need it, and I think air-leveled coaches would not need it per the design. If your coach was older, I'd be comfortable saying drive it (CC put the best stuff in their rigs at one time and would have used only bumper type bags), but due to the vintage you should get advice from somebody who has had this issue on your vintage & model. Lotta cheap tricks used during the 05-07 era.

I had a blown air bag last year in Maine. fortunately, another CC owner nearby had a spare. Did not know it was the right one until the old one came off.

Coachnet sent a trucking company from 45 miles away and they very expertly changed the airbag in the campground.
To get the airbag replaced from Firestone took about 6 weeks.

A possible alternative to waiting until 9 Aug for Camping World is to call Robert Chapman at "the 1 Stop Custom Shop" in COS. 719-495-2740. www.onestopcustomshop.com. He fixed my Magnum Inerter/Charger last week. While he specializes in chargers/inverters...he can do most anythnig else with motorhomes. Located near intersection of Black Forest Road and Woodmen Road. 6925 Wyoming Lane, COS 80923. About 10 miles from the AF Academy. He did a great job on my coach...let me watch the entire procedure, answered questions. All-in-all, a good experience. Not cheap ($120/hr labor)...but very thorough and fair. I will take my coach back there for maintenane/service. mark/deb

Tom,

I wouldn't attempt to drive it just for the possible liability in this crazy law suit environment. What if there was an accident? The blood sucking Lawyers would have a field day with you.

There must be a mobile truck guy around. All he has to do is jack the frame and axle, remove the wheel and change it out. I doubt you could drive it as the compressor would never keep up unless you plug the line.

Bob,

The airbag is made by Firestone and had the Number WO 13588195 and replaced the airbag on the front left of the coach. I can only assume all the airbags are the same though there is no way of knowing until you get it out.
The trucking company came to the campsite with large jacks, removed the front wheel and replace the airbag very quickly and very expertly. I got them thru Coachnet. That and a few other incidents has made me a great fan of Coachnet.

I thought I would bring everyone up to date on my air bag situation. God was shining on me inasmuch as the son of the rv park manager here in Colorado Springs worked for 3 1/2 years for a heavy duty truck suspension outfit and worked on heavy duty suspensions on everything from rv's to tanks. He knew exactly what to do and came to my motorhome and removed the blown air bag, got all of the numbers from the inside of the air bag, then called the suspension outfit he worked for and gave them the numbers and the suspension outfit said, "I'll have one of those available for you to pick up tomorrow by noon." For those that have an interest the numbers that were inside the air bag were as follows:NAD2945695501T15M-2NCD56879448According to the suspension place the key number is the "9448" which is what they used to order the proper air bag.
Tomorrow when I pick up the new air bag, I'll report in again and give everyone the name of the suspension outfit for everyone's future reference. Happy endings are good, Brian Davis2005 '42 Intrigue OVTS Coach #11901p.s.: the dolt that Coach Net sent out was a total dud!

One time the coach would not inflate the air bags and they sent out a truck to haul it to a repair shop but the guy said if he did that we would be suing the company that he worked for. He fixed it enough that we could drive it to a repair shop and get it fixed. We have had them since 1998 but if I got terrible service I would let someone know.
