Radiator Reservoir Level

Yahoo Message Number: 71500
My coach (2005 Allure Cat C9) came back from the shop for an overheating problem which they and Cat can't figure out. I noticed the radiator reservoir fluid level eyelet was clear with a little green at the bottom. The engine was cold so I started it and it warmed up and the eyelet was than almost all green. Is that correct or am I low on coolant?

Thanks, John

I don't think you have a low coolant problem. I keep my fluid half way at the eyelet windo, cold. After it warms up, the whole eyelet is green. If you can see the green, you probably have enough fluid for cooling, although it may be slightly low. Have you had your fan controller looked at?

The manual for my 2000 magna says to check the sight glass when the coolant is warm. You can expect the coolant to expand about 10% when it gets hot so it might not be at the sight glass when the engine is cold. pete,

Yes, the repair shop I took it to checked and found the fan controller worked properly. They couldn't figure it out so they took it to the CAT dealer. They found computor errors that it had overheated but they found everything was working. They reset the computer and they both test drove it and couldn't get it hotter than 186. Both shops can't figure it out. Neither shop charged me after having it a week so I am going to moniter the temp and see what happens.

Take your rig back to the Cat shop and Have them do a Radiator pressure test as per c-9 servive man also put your rig on a dyno and have them do a bottle test! Had a similer problem back in 08 on a new generator Cat C-9, Also have them check the water pump for loose impeller!~ Bad news on my unit, turnd out to be a head gasket, Also the Laptop will help the tech, They shoud give you a goodwill on repair and trouble shooting hours, Keep us posted! Trust me you would of left my shop Ringpower in Tampa repaird and Happy. Ken Retired Factory Trained Teck. Allure 30356

Ken, I have not heard any repair issues related to a loose impeller for a long time. There were years ago when that did occur way to often.
My best find for a customer was some brain dead idiot removed the coil spring from a lower radiator hose. For what reason is anyone's guess. Up to that point he had been to 4 shops and a driveway full of replacement parts installed, plus 2 radiators.
The only thing we could speculate is pulling the spring made the hose easy to install.

Ken here, Thanks for sharing, Made me Laugh! Hopefully our fellow CC Owner and his C-9 Will post his findings. CC Has better Engine houses then SOB' trust me. Funny on newer Cat produced Engine Power systems theydont use Alum. Radiators but in the interest of money some endusers use Alum. Our old CC Allure has the Brass type and Hydrolic fan control valve, Dum luck for me. Ken 99 Allure 30356

I have a 2006 inspire with a C9 engine.  I had it in the shop for an engine warning light and Stop engine light coming on.  They replaced a pressure/temp sensor and filled the expansion tank to full with a cold engine. After driving it for 300 miles the lights came on again/ coolant temp 220. When I stopped the engine and checked fluid level in the expansion tank it was down to half level.  I started the engine and the lights went off,  temp dropped to +\- 200 and run fine for another 150 miles.  All of these miles were on the interstate.  Drove 50 miles off the interstate and temp dropped to 170.  Coolant level still half way down expansion tank. How far up the expansion tank should the coolant level be when cold?  Any comments or suggestions appreciated.

If you have the site glass IMO you should see it in it cold.
